Meet the Brooklyn guard who averaged 35ppg last year

Don't sleep. Sterling Young is no joke

As a lot of the talk pertaining to Brooklyn Basketball has been slighted towards powerhouses such as South Shore and Jefferson, a wiry Brooklyn guard from Bayridge Prep has been getting buckets at a historic rate. As a junior, Sterling Young has put up five games of  40 or more and eight 30 point games. He finished the year at a whopping 35.2 a game last year. The buckets turned heads, and raised questions about why he isn't at one of the cities premier schools. Bayridge's academics are a priority to him though, and he rightfully feels like he should be in the conversation regardless. As he prepares for a statement senior year, we asked him a few questions about his season and his future going forward.

1. Your stats are very impressive, but you've managed to slip under the radar for the most part. Do you feel as though you belong in the conversation for one of Brooklyn's best?

I definitely feel like I belong in the conversation with Brooklyns best. Definitely as one of the top point guards.

2. What are the best parts of your game? What would you say needs work?

The best part of my game is shooting, ballhandling and passing. I worked hard last summer going into the season and it showed.I scored well but was also able to draw defenders and got teammates open shots as well I definitely want to work on getting stronger as well as defensively. I also want to continue becoming a better shooter and ballhandler.

"I grew 3 inches as well going into this season and it helped a lot."

3. I'm sure you've heard that you need to move to a more established "Basketball school" for more exposure. How have you dealt with this? Is it something you think about?

Yeah I heard it all season. Sometimes from Coaches , referees and opposing players. I took it as a compliment. My goal is to transfer to a prep school for next season. I'm hoping to find a school with good academics and a stronger basketball program.Whats good is that I have my Coach and Athletic Director from Bayridge Prep supporting me.

4. Are you playing any AAU ball outside of Bayridge? Where can we catch you this summer?

AAU is same, looking for a good team to play for . In the meantime just playing/working out everyday to be ready for the spring and summer.

5. Lets talk about that ppg average. 35 a game? What kind of zone were you in this year man?

Yes 35ppg was good scoring. I did most of it on the perimeter and off the dribble creating  space and then a shot. I grew 3 inches as well going into this season and it helped a lot.

6. You've broken school records and tore it up this past year. How do you plan on topping that performance come senior year?

Breaking the school record was great I put highlights on youtube. .For next year I just wanna keep getting better improving and hopefully I can put together an even  better year.

"Anyone or Coach in the city sleeping on me I would let them know I'm worth checking out and right with any guys being talked about for 2020"

7. What is your goal as far as college? What level would you say you see yourself at on the next level?

As far as college my goal is to play division 1. I have the talent and a good work ethic and at 6'1" I have good height for the position I feel. I have a 3.2 gpa also and another year to get better which I'm focusing on each day.

8. What would you say to all of the people in the city who sleep on you because of your school and level of competition?

Anyone or Coach in the city sleeping on me I would let them know I'm worth checking out and right with any guys being talked about for 2020, just haven't been seen yet!
