Southside Thrives! Meet the group bringing culture to Queens

The first event was a rousing SUCCESS

Jamaica Queens was buzzing on Saturday afternoon for the very first event hosted by Southside Thrives. The Non Profit organization is comprised of various young artists who's mission is to bring culture to the forefront of the borough through events which explore various artistic mediums. We were lucky enough to be on hand, and we left feeling nourished from the healthy dialogue which took place throughout.

"The event served as a dope space for creative types, but also brought the young people out for a Town Hall type discussion in a way that very few events are able to do."

The event was the first of a two part discussion, focused on the arts and education in Southeast Queens. Attendees voiced their opinions both verbally and through a clever live poll, which displayed answers through text message. The fact that Queens is a largely untapped gold mine of culture and diversity remained a theme throughout, which was reinforced by many of the entrepreneurs and artists who were in attendance. Topics such as whether Queens has adequate resources and schools were up for debate, which introduced some strong, yet civilized opinions.

The event served as a dope space for creative types, but also brought the young people out for a Town Hall type discussion in a way that very few events are able to do. With some dope featured artists like Thiahera Nurse & Uncutt sprinkled in, South Side Thrives successfully put together a well rounded and informative outing. We'll be looking out for this organization and their events going forward. Next weekend, they'll pick up where they left off, with a discussion centered around healing and community. Expect to see some dope young creatives, hear some jewels dropped, and smell the resurrection of Jamaica Queens as this crew continues their ascent.
