Gritty City Episode 1: Inside the world of Chutney Music

A look at Chutney Music and the musicians keeping it alive

In our new documentary series Gritty City, we'll be documenting the Arts and Culture scene all across NYC, but particularly in Queens. You might not know this, but Queens is the single most diverse place on the planet, and growing up there meant getting a taste of all the different types of music that comes with it. Caribbean music is an absolute staple in NYC and while many focus on Reggae, Dancehall or Soca Music, our first episode is focused on the underrated but integral world of Chutney Music.

In this quick one minute recap, you can learn more about the history of Chutney Music, and how it ties into the history of Indo-Caribbean people as a whole. We'll be teaming up with Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning to tell more of these stories, and keep providing a platform to those who on the music scene in the borough of Queens.
