Meet Zyaa, the Spoken Word Artist and Musician ready to take off

The Poet You Have to Check Out TODAY.

Anyone with a decent way with words can call themself a poet, but it often takes true vulnerability and soul searching to create something impactful. In "Mad Hatter", a spoken word poem by Zyaa, we're given front row seats as the artist searches for answers in a way that is relatable and human. As she wanders through an aimless field, Zyaa expresses that she may not have all the answers when it comes to her faith, but she's searching, and that's definitely a start. "Honestly when I wrote Mad Hatter, I was in a vulnerable space trying to figure out who I am and what I even mean to the world as a black woman...I was questioning if I meant anything at all." She says. "There was some hesitation about giving myself over to everyone, like giving people my raw self but then it became a thing about this being for me and not anyone else."

"I just make music freely and happily, which is connected to my identity as a poet because poetry for me was about freedom."

Zyaa's ability to pull from her own experiences to create powerful poetry is also on display in her older work like "give me my sun back" and "The Rebirth". In the latter poem, she speaks of internalized trauma from her childhood and the strength needed to break through generational curses. Just as "The Rebirth" reaches its climax, she strips off a layer of black clothes, revealing a colorful dress underneath and strutting away to ruckus applause.

Her talents as a spoken word artist and performer will surely translate nicely over to music, a field in which Zyaa is already beginning to tap into. "I literally feel like with the music there are not any rules," She says. "I just make music freely and happily, which is connected to my identity as a poet because poetry for me was about freedom." Going forward, Zyaa's goal is to continue to make art that heals people, and makes them feel. Her current work did just that for us, so we can only imagine what's in store next.
