Kass risks it all with his latest single "Down for Me"

The Ottawa Musician with the Melodic Sound

It's always interesting to hear the exact moment that served as a spark for an artist pursuing their passion. For the Ottawa musician known as Kass, that moment can be traced back to a single interlude that he created for his older brother in the mid 2000's. At just nine years old, Kass decided then and there, that this music thing was exactly what he wanted to do. Since that day, he's established himself as a premier talent in his city, combining a dreamy, otherworldly sound with 2000's inspired R&B. He broke through with his 2017 single "Drunk Textin" which now has over 100k listens on Spotify.

Two projects later, Kass' sound is even more refined in his newest single "Down for me". The catchy lyrics detail a relationship brewing with a lady friend, as Kass floats over a self produced beat. We chatted with the artist about his latest track and his creative process below.

1. Let's start from the beginning. We read about the moment in the mid 2000's that sparked your interest in music. What was it about that interlude that you created that made you know music is the route for you?

I felt the most free I’ve ever felt in terms of expression, which has followed me ‘till this day. After that little interlude there was just a feeling of being at ease, and having the ability to say what you want freely with no judgment at that present moment. That classic saying “it’s just me and the mic” goes a long way!

2. What was it like breaking through independently with a song like “Drunk Textin” in 2017? Can you talk about how that solidified your sound musically?

It felt good man, felt like that monkey was off my back fo’ real. It really made me take this music thing seriously, and turn it from a side hobby to an actual life goal of mine.Up until that point you could tell I had that amateurish vibe on me. Every song sounded like a completely different artist, etc. Looking back on it now, I needed that little break through to establish confidence. Being able to see the love instead of just hearing it made me accept the fact that this song sounds different but  is still good. From that point on I’ve always tried to deliver that distinct melodic presence in every song. Canadian Rappers

3. Your latest track "Down for Me" continues with that dreamy sound that you've established. What was the inspiration behind that track?

Basically the song is about a little fling I had with a girl from the south side of the city in Ottawa. I meet her at school a little while after breaking things off with my ex girl. At first we were just cool, but you know how that go... https://youtu.be/RuPV_hTQz90

4. What’s your creative process like for tracks like this? How involved are you in the production? Is it something you do on your own or do you embrace collaboration etc?

When it comes to the creative process for me it really starts with the beat, I never go into any session knowing what the outcome of the song will be. If it’s an emotional song the beat will lead me into it. From there a bar usually comes up right away and kicks off the song, at that point I’ll decide if it’s more of a hook or verse starter. Besides making the beat, I produce all my music with my engineer. I haven’t yet collab’d with anyone in a session, it’s more just sending verses here and there but that’s something I’m looking forward in doing. I feel like the vibe of the song is better delivered in a collaborative setting, and I think the listener can definitely feel that. Canadian Singer

    5.  We loved your last body of work, "We Hours", are you cooking up another project anytime soon? What should we expect next?

After my last Ep “TBH” I decide to take some time in just pushing singles, as much as I love making a body of work I find it takes up time and at this stage in my career I feel I should be focusing more on dropping songs consistently to keep my name up.
