Solomon Cazer impresses with his soulful 1st single "Falling"

The Saint Louis artist is off to a great start

If falling in love had a theme song, we're almost certain that it'd be sung by Solomon Cazer. In his new release "Falling", he takes listeners on a surreal trip of infatuation. The Saint Louis artist combines elements of Neo Soul and Jazz, pulling from influences of his music filled childhood. Serving as both the producer and singer on the track, Soloman's vocals are in perfect harmony with his production throughout. He knows exactly when to let the instrumentation do the talking, and creates an atmospheric vibe that's nothing short of incredible. We had to ask him a few questions about his process and his inspirations.

1. What was the creative process like in making this track? Can you walk us through your production and songwriting?

My single, “Falling” had taken many different shapes before it became what it is now.  I thought about how it feels to fall for someone.  It’s a surrealistic dreamlike feeling.  How you’ve known the world starts to become flipped on its axis.  I recorded the sound of rainfall.  I like the idea of incorporating the world around me into my music.  I then layered that with the sound of a Latin Percussion instrument made from a cactus called a Chilean Rainstick that was believed by the indigenous peoples of Chile to bring rainfall to the Earth when used in rituals.  At that point, I was approaching the song as a ballad.  I played some Rhodes keys, and layered it with some Grand Piano keys.  However, as I was improvising on keys, the color of the song changed.  Honestly, I didn’t really expect it to.  I was just moved by curiosity and what remained from that decision really resonated with me.  The drums came next then I recorded several different basslines, until two stuck to the track.  Everything else flowed as a stream of consciousness from that point forward.

2. Can you tell us a bit about you, where you’re from, what inspired your sound etc?

I was raised in a Christian household in Saint Louis, Missouri.  My parents are big music lovers and would play all kinds of records of music from a wide array of genres.  I remember hearing artists such as Stevie Wonder, Prince, D’Angelo, Sade, the Clark Sisters, Pat Metheny, Earth Wind & Fire, Sergio Mendes, Joao Gilberto, Coltrane, and many others around the house or in the car from my earliest memories in life.  I believe the exposure to different styles of music early on sparked my curiosity of how it's all put together.  I had an uncle who had passed when I was young who was a Jazz pianist and inspired me to teach myself different instruments and how to incorporate those unique sounds into my production.  As I began to listen to more music, I wandered towards different genres such as Hip Hop, Rock, and more experimental forms of Jazz and electronic music.  As time continues, my inspirations will continue to multiply and my sound will evolve.

3. What should we expect from you going forward as far as the music?

To be honest, I would say expect the unexpected.  The roots of soulful music will always run deep in my inspiration as the foundation for the music I make.  However, I want to show many different shades of myself in the different styles of music I love.  These are painful times and we are living in a cold world.  Making music is my personal form of free therapy, I guess.  I want to share myself with the world and I pray my music can inspire someone.  If I can share the good, the bad, the ugly, the eccentricism and the beauty of my human condition, I think I would have found what I have been looking for.
