Here are 5 new shows we're streaming right now
Quick reviews on a few buzz-worthy new shows
If you're anything like us, you're always in search of your next favorite new shows. We've been binging a few as of late and we thought we'd spread the love. Check em out below!
I am not okay with this (Netflix)
Based on the book of the same name, the series places us in the quirky world of Syd, an awkward, cynical teenager with newfound superpowers. The show stylishly depicts her coming of age tale as she navigates awkward relationships and the loss of her father.
Cons: A few overly abused cliches. The asshole jock archetype. The awkwardly detached protagonist (HBO Euphoria vibes). Nonetheless, we recommend.
Pros: The color palettes, cinematography and costumes are great. It feels really vintage, and stylistically it plays like a 70s or 80s period piece. The situations and characters are very Gen-z though, but somehow the mash up works.
Dave (FX)
Not gonna lie we came in to this viewing experience pretty suspicious, because the trailer felt like it’d be a gentrified version of FX’s breakout show Atlanta. While it’s clear that Donald has proven that the formula works, Lil Dicky has carved out his own niche. “Dave” follows it's protagonist of the same name as he goes on a quest for rap superstardom, and there are some genuinely funny moments along the way.
Cons: So far, the show is pretty surface level, but it works. We’re hoping it continues to gain depth going forward.
Pros: The cameos in this show are great, as Dave encounters rappers who play themselves throughout. In the first two episodes, we’ve already seen YG and Macklemore. The best part is our boy Taco from odd future fame though, playing Dave's friend and music engineer.
Twenties (BET)
Just when we were starting to think BET was permanently synonymous with Tyler Perry, Lena Waithe came along and saved the day with “Twenties”. The show is awesomely directed and it’s protagonist “Hattie” is a refreshing site in terms of representation. Loosely based on Lena’s own life, “Twenties” follows Hattie as she pursues her dream of being a Hollywood TV writer.
Cons: Twenties can lack subtlety at times in terms of the dialogue. There are a few times when we can hear Lena straight up preaching to us through the characters.
Pros: The music and cinematography are awesome. Hattie has a thing for Whitney Houston in the show and as a result we are treated to some of her classics throughout. Black skin is shot really well in the show also.
Cherish the day (OWN)
Ava Duvernays new anthology series doesn’t pop off the screen with excitement, but it has a niche and sticks to it well. It’s a slowly unfurling love story between two black leads from wildly different backgrounds. As the world tries to highlight their differences to pull them apart, the love birds fight for their love, through thick and thin. If you wear button up shirts with brunch boots, you’d probably love this show.
Cons: Cherish the day moves at a slow pace. Personally, we like seeing two unproblematic black folks find love. If you’d prefer for the stakes to be a bit higher, go find your thrill elsewhere.
Pros: The show is beautifully shot. It’s somehow always sunset during the outside scenes, which is admittedly questionable but nonetheless serves as a gorgeous visual backdrop for the two lovers.
High Fidelity
Zoe Kravitz picks up where her mom left off, as the series is based on the movie of the same name. The show follows Rob, the owner of a struggling record store, as she deals with relationships and heartbreaks. It has the feel of Masters Of None (Netflix) at times, which isn’t a bad thing. It’s super hip, stylish and very NYC.
Cons: The show sometimes feel like a hipster’s wet dream. Once in a while it sacrifices quality to be pretentious.
Pros: The music is absolutely phenomenal. Questlove is the music supervisor in the show and it definitely shows. Also, we’re a sucker for quirky sequences like characters breaking the fourth wall, which High Fidelity does in abundance.
