Queen of the drums! Taylor Gordon is the illest out
The pure talent is one of the best in the bizz
Frank Ocean once famously said: "Church was the hood Julliard to me. All of the coldest musicians came from there." The House Of The Lord has always been considered home to some of the most prodigious musical talents, and in the New Orleans raised Taylor Gordon, it gave birth to yet another star. The drummer, producer and all around gifted musician found her start early on the drums at church, and has since taken her talent all around the world. Currently based in LA, Gordon received a Presidential Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. After receiving her Bachelors, she's gone on to take the stage with artists such as Musiq Soulchild, Stevie Wonder and much more. Taylor Gordon took the time out from her busy tour schedule to talk to us about her blossoming career, and we're forever grateful for it.
1. What was your upbringing like in a city with a rich culture like New Orleans? How would you compare musicians in New Orleans vs LA?
I started playing drums at age 3. I never really played Peggie’s around the city while living there. I was brought up in church. Its where my parents would first encourage me to face my fears of playing in front of people. By age 7 I was the full time drummer for my church. From what I know now, in LA, Music is money. In New Orleans, although musicians still make a great living, music is just music.
2. Where does your inspiration come from? What would you say separates you from other drummers?
I listen to a lot of old school music, so therefore I am influenced but a lot of old school drummers. In a day and age that is full of licks and chops, I believe that and musicality is was sets me apart.
3.What's been some of your most memorable accomplishments so far, as far as music goes?
Well when I look back I seem to have accomplished a lot. But I’m far from done. One of my proudest moments hearing a song that I arranged in a movie (Black Nativity). Another proud moment was being apart of Beyoncé’s segment at the Super Bowl half time show that she performed with Bruno Mars and Coldplay: I was also very proud to hear a song that I co-produced on the radio sung by Chris Brown. I’m also proud of the work and responses I’m getting to my work on social media. Very thankful!!
4. Who are some musicians you'd like to work with? If you could build a dream band, who would be along side you?
I would love to continue to work my fellow Berklee Alum and friend MonoNeon. I would love to work with thundercat, Anderson Paak, Labrinth, Timbaland, dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Bootsy Collins... that’s all I can think of right now. I would have to think more about a dream band. But one of the guys I mentioned above would be on bass for sure.
5. What's next for Taylor Gordon? Any projects/shows etc you'd like to talk about?
Well I just completed the #PSATour with fifth harmony. I plan on launching my online lessons next month, along with continuing to build my following on social media. I’m also working on my first solo project which will contain songs written and produced by me will feature various artists I’ve been blessed to work with over the years.
